IBI uses a specialized form of mass spectrometry to produce information about protein mass and structure. Matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF/MS) can produce qualitative information about differences between the sample protein and its normal or modified state as well as quantitative information on the proteins' abundance. This represents a distinct advantage over other analysis technologies, which oftentimes cannot differentiate between wild-type and variant protein species and have other disadvantages such as cost, sample purity, and limitations on the kinds of proteins that can be analyzed.

IBI's tools and techniques create a unique way to screen and characterize proteins with a high-throughput, industrial approach. Through this methodology, IBI can generate detailed information about protein structure and function from a large volume of protein samples quickly and cost-effectively.
